Carpet Care Experts uses the "Hot Water Extraction" method of carpet cleaning, which is often called steam cleaning although no steam is used (what looks like steam I actually the water vapor from the hot water). As professional hot water extraction cleaners, we use truck-mounted machines to heat and pressurize water and provide suction for extraction.

To find out why hot water extraction is a better way to clean carpets than powder or dry foam chemical processes, see our FAQ.

Step One: Inspection and quote

When Carpet Care Experts arrives at your home we inspect all the areas that you want cleaned.  We want to hear from you about problem spots or areas of concern that you want us to pay special attention to.  We discuss which furniture you want moved as well as any questions you have about the cleaning process.  We have detection equipment than can locate pet stains, water damage, and many spots which cannot be seen with the human eye. We also look for problems or spots on the carpet which will need specific chemicals or cleaning techniques, such as pet urine, rust, or gum.

Most importantly, we will give you an honest and exact quote before we ever start a job.  This quote is usually the same as the estimate you were given over the phone or the internet, but may be adjusted for extra areas or services that have been added. We will not surprise you with any added charges after a job is already done.

Step Two: Pre-spray and Spot Pre-treatment

Carpet Care Experts then prepares a pre-spray mixture, which consists of a mild detergent and a degreaser made from concentrated orange rind, both non-toxic and both diluted in water.  We then treat the carpet with the pre-spray. Carpet Care Experts is one of the few area carpet cleaners who spend the extra time and effort to do this vital step in cleaning.

Step Three: Agitation

Carpet Care Experts then uses a carpet rake to agitate the pre-spray into the carpet. This activates the soap and begins dissolving dirt, particles, allergens, stains, and pollutants into the pre-spray mixture. The solution continues to attract soils while we set up for the rest of the cleaning.

Step Four: Set-up

Carpet Care Experts carefully brings our hoses and wand into the farthest point inside away from our truck, so we can clean our way out. We then gather any additional cleaners we will need for specific spots and start cleaning.

Step Five: Hot Water Application and Extraction

The machine heats the water to between 180º and 210º and pressurizes the water. The machine also mixes in a rinsing agent, which will neutralize detergents in the carpet, including soaps left from previous attempts at cleaning or spot removal. Using a wand to which pressure and suction hoses are attached, we shoot the pressurized, heated water into the carpet.

The soap and dirt are dissolved into the water, extracted into the wand and deposited in a waste tank in the truck. We then make a extra passes to rinse and ensure that the only thing left behind is neutral water. This clear water rinse does not leave residues like chemical foams, powders, rotary bonnet, or portable carpet cleaners.

The pressurized hot water not only cleans the carpet, but restores it to its proper texture by reactivating the proper twist in the fibers. This helps minimize traffic wear in high traffic areas, and adds to the useful lifespan of the carpeting.

Carpet Care Experts' hotwater extraction is the only method recommended by carpet m anufactuers for deep cleaning. For more on why carpet manufacturers recommend regular steam cleaning in their warranties, see the last entry in the How to Care for your Carpets section of our web site.

Step Six: Spotting

While we are cleaning, we will treat any spots which the pre-spray did not get out, using the detergents we prepared in step one. We then thoroughly neutralize and rinse the additional spotting chemicals out of the carpet.

Step Seven: Drying

The last thing we do as part of the normal process is a drying stroke with the wand, to suck up as much water as possible. Depending on weather and humidity conditions, your carpets will generally take from 4 to 8 hours to dry. We also put tabs under any furniture we have moved to protect the furniture and the carpet.

Optional steps

Depending on the package you've purchased, we may also:

  • groom the cleaned carpets for optimal appearance
  • apply ScotchGuard™ protectant to prevent stains
  • clean upholstery or furniture
  • offer drying aid with fans
